Frequently Asked Questions about posting problems

Many class members have reported problems posting to the group. Some of the problems are caused by the students, but sometimes the problem is with Google. Students that are members and are doing everything correctly have still had problems. Sometimes the problem is that there are bugs in the google groups software.

There are several options you can try to fix the problem:

  1. If you signed up by email, make sure the email account you are posting from is the same account you signed up to the group with. For example, if you signed up using myemail@mynet.com, you must use myemail@mynet.com to post to the class. If you use any other email address, you will get a message saying 'You must be a member to post.'
  2. You can report the problem to google, but this hasn't worked very well. To report the problem, go to the link below to report:

    http://groups.google.com/support/bin/request.py?contact_type=post#

On the report problem page where it asks for 'For "URL of your group: * ' enter one of the following, depending on which class you are taking:

Below are groups homepages, which is the URL:

  3. If you are signing in to the class through the web interface on goggle grops and trying to post, please try clearing cookies before posting. The group website can be accessed by the links above in #2. See this page for information on using the web interface. The web interface is accessible only if you signed up by creating a google account. If you signed up by email, this does not apply to you.
  4. Create another email account with google gmail and join with the new email account. Just go to google.com and click on gmail to create an account. Please unsubscribe from the old account if you do this. If you have problems unsubscribing please let me know so I can deleted your old membership.
  5. If you create a gmail account, you will have created an account with google. Another way of accessing the group is by signing on to google and going directly to the group website and signing up through the groups website interface. For more information on signing up through google and using the web interface, please see this page, Signing up through Google.
  6. Myself, I created an account with google and joined the class directly by going to the group website and joining (see #4 above). This is the most flexible option and has worked well for me.
