• It is my goal to post the presentation material by Thursday night of each week so that students have a chance to see them before the Thursday night class. (I am sure there will be exceptions, however.)
• The presentation material will be posted in three different forms
• PDF file with speaker notes (if I have time to do it).  Folks who are taking this course "online" are expected to read this file.
• 4 slides per page PDF file.  Folks who are coming to the class can bring the printout of this file.
• StarOffice file.  The StarOffice file can be read by using either Sun's StarOffice 6.0 or OpenOffice from openoffice.org.  You are welcome to use the StarOffice files as long as you include the "disclaimer & acknowledgment" slide.
• Some people find that eBookReader from Adobe is quite useful in reading PDF files, for example, you can get software to voice-read the speaker notes.  eBookReader can be downloade from here (only Windows and Mac platforms are supported).
• I am constantly updating my presentation material even for the ones I already talked about.  I am giving a lot of talks on various topics so I am constantly going back to old presentation materials including the ones I am using for this class to update them with newer and hopefully with better contents.  And I will, once in a while, update whole contents.  Typically when I post the material a couple of days before the class, the contents should be about 95% stable.  So the hard copies you have should suffice the need for writing notes and would require only minor modifications.  I will also update the material right after the class so that you have at least the same ones you saw during the class.

• At this time, I don't have any plan (nor resource) to offer real-time webcasting.  I am looking at a possibility of recording the "face-to-face" session into a MP3 file, maybe in the future sessions.
• Right now, I am more focused on creating slides with detailed speaker notes.   It is my intention to follow the speaker notes as closely as possible during the "face-to-face" class.
• Online attendees are expected to do the course work pretty much in the same way as the "face-to-face" attendees do and they include the following:
• Read the pre-class reading material
• Read the presentation slides (with speaker notes)
• Do the homework and final project
• Participate in class email alias
• So the only difference between online experience and "face-to-face" experience would be "face-to-face" attendees see/listen to instructors live.
• I am planning to ask one of the teaching assistants to take note on the questions and answers during the class and post to the class email alias.

Expected amount of work you will have to do in order to finish this course successfully (besides attending classes)

• There will be about 6 or 7 homework's, which means for each class, there will be a corresponding homework assignment. Each homework will take between 4 to 8 hours depending on individual skill set and knowledge. Typical homework assignment includes the following:
• Installation of software and running demo programs
• Modifying demo programs
• Building and deploying various J2EE programs
• There will be a final project.
• There will not be a mid-term exam nor project

There will not be quizzes during classes

• Before you can submit a homework,  you need to register to homework submission wesite. In order to register, please go to the following website and enter your first name, last name, email, and a password. This information can be changed by you log in the next time

• Objectives
• To build an E-commerce application using various J2EE technologies minimally, Servlet or JSP, and Session bean and Entity beans
• You are welcome to add any other J2EE features such as Message-Driven Beans (MDB), Connector architecture, Web services, MVC pattern, etc.
  
• Tasks
• You build an web-based e-commerce (or something similar) application of your choice and reasonable complexity.  By reasonable complexity, I meant the following (I agree this numeric description is somewhat arbitrary but this is one way to make the scope of final project less ambiguous.)  It is OK for you to use the existing sample E-commerce application as a base and then add your own DB tables,  JSP/Servlet and EJB beans.
• Minumum 3 web-tier components (JSP or Servlet)
• Form-based authentication
• Minimum 2 database tables
• Use of CMP 2.0 "local" entity beans
• Use of Stateful session beans (example: shopping cart stateful session beans)
• Use of Stateless session beans like (example: catalog)

• The conference room in Burlington campus we will have weekly classes is called "Martha's Vineyard" in building 9.  The classroom is located only in 10 seconds' walking distance from the Sun Burlington campus main lobby.  (Once you enter the Sun restricted area through the security door at the lobby, take your first left at the double-door.  The double-door is in less than 20 feet away from the lobby.  Once you take the first left turn at the double-door, the classroom is there on your right.  In fact, from the lobby area, you should be able to see the hall outside of the classroom.  It is located somehwat in the middle between clock tower and the lobby.)

• The classroom is located within Sun's private (thus restricted) property area so you need to check with at Sun security personnel at the lobby first before you get in. Usually you need to sign and get a temporary badge.  But for this course, it is arranged that you need to only show your photo ID and then sign your name on a sign sheet and then get in.
• Once you are within Sun's restricted property, everyone of you is expected to honor Sun's security requirement.  Please do not wander around beyond the common area (classroom, hall outside of the classroom, common area that leads to restrooms) even if the door seemed to be unlocked. (The fact that the door is not locked does not mean it is not restricted area.)  I personally guaranteed "our students' voluntary observation of Sun's security requirement" to Sun security personnel and if there is any breach of this agreement, having a "face to face" class within Sun campus in the future could be jeopardized.
• The capacity of the classroom is 200 people.  And I cannot accomodate more than 200 people due to fire hazard regulation.  The face to face class is basically first come first serve basis.
  

• If you submitted all the homeworks and final project, you will be given a certificate.
• The certificate has no affliation with any colleges, educational institution, company.  Instead, it is my personal recognition that you have done your share of work, thus successfully finished the course.
• For face to face attendees, I will set up a time when you can pick up your certificates.  For online attendees, you have to send me return-envelope with proper stamp in order to receive paper certificate.  (I am also thinking about sending certificates via email for online attendees.)

• Since there is some expense involved in operating this class (website, domain name registration, creating certficates, etc.), attendees of the face-to-face class of the 1st session generously donated $385 dollars, which will be used as a community fund of this class from this point on

• This course is specifically offered to unemployed colleagues of our industry.  Please let them know about this class.  (I am sure you know several.)   Employed engineers will be accepted as long as there are free spaces for "face to face" sessions.
• This course can be taken "online" as well.  That is, if you cannot attend the class in person because you live in California or in India for example, you can still take the course "online" by studying the weekly course materials yourself, doing the homeworks and final project, and participating in the class discussion through class email alias.  Everybody regardless of their employment status is welcome to take the course online.  For those folks who take the course online, I am planning to add detailed speaker notes to the slides to the extent I find time to do so.
• This is the second time I am offering a free course.  If you are curious on how it would be like, please take a look at "Jini programming" course I taught during the summer of 2002.
• This is 10 session course that might span about 3 month period (or more depending on how hectic my travel schedule becomes).  The detailed class schedule will be posted in this class website and up-to-the minute schedule change will be posted to class email alias. • The "face to face" class sessions will be held between 6:00PM to 9:00PM on Monday nights. (The primary reason the class is held on Monday nights is that I travel a lot and having a class in the middle of the week makes scheduling my travel a real challenge.)
• Each session has pre-class reading material.  It is strongly recommended that you read the material before coming to class.  It is my experience that when students come to class with lots of questions, it is a lot more lively and fun.  (Well, actually given the potentially large size of the class, I would restrict the number of questions that can be asked during the class as well as number of questions a single person can ask - 1 question per a session - so that we can cover the day's material.  I would encourage people to ask questions that are unanswered through the class mail alias instead.)
• Each session will have a homework.  You are expected to do the homework every week.  Homework is a programming assignment.  Depending on your Java experience, each homework will take between 4 to 8 hours to complete.
• You are expected to do final project.  There is no mid-term project and there is no quizzes during the class.
• We will use our class email alias through which you can ask questions or answer questions from fellow students.  Hopefully we can secure some teaching assistants who can answer questions.
• The prerequisite of this course is 6 months Java programming experience.  If you have some object-programming experience like in C++ but no Java programming experience, you can easily pick up Java programming knowledge by following Basic Java tutorials found in java.sun.com.
• I am teaching this course purely as my personal endeavor using my personal time and resource (and of course with generous help from my employer, Sun Microsystems, allowing us to use the class room facilities).  So please be warned that things might not always be as timely or as organized as it could be.
